A while ago I wrote a blog about finding the Content Type Hub in SharePoint Online. This site collection should be accessible for all Office 365 Global Administrators. Today I actually encountered an issue where I couldn’t access the Content Type Hub while I had the Global Administrator permissions.
Thanks to the great support of Microsoft we found a workaround to provide access:
https://tenantname-admin.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/online/TA_SiteCollectionOwnersdialog.aspx?site=https://tenantname.sharepoint.com/sites/contentTypeHub
Just replace tenantname with your tenant name (DUH ;)) and you are able to assign yourself as site collection administrator to the Content Type Hub.

December 21, 2020 at 11:07 amThanks for that – now have access to the site!
Only one problem remaining – the Content Type Gallery throws “An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later.” and trying to create a Content Type results in the never-ending spinning circle. Seems like I need to hit it with a bigger hammer :-/

April 4, 2022 at 4:33 pmFor the people that google their way to this issue – I had the same issue as Chrisk – received the same error message after adding myself as a user to the second field – Site Collection Administrator. BUT – even though there was an error, when I went back into the same URL my name was added AND I was able to create/edit content types in the admin site when I had not be able to do so previously. To OP – thanks for this post!
